{"id":71607,"date":"2024-03-07T11:30:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T08:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/71607\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"update-on-arrests-trials-politically-motivated-persecution-140","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/71607\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on arrests, trials, politically-motivated persecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>March 7, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 6 as authorities kept harassing 2020 postelection protest participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry&#8217;s organized crime unit officers arrested five persons in Biaroza, Brest region, for alleged participation in 2020 protests, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Hrodna man was arrested for participating in a protest rally and posting comments that allegedly insulted Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials, a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Lida, Hrodna region, jailed a father of two for 15 days for posting \u017dyvie Bie\u0142arus (Long Live Belarus) on social media, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New criminal charges<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposition activist Andrej Kudzik from Vilejka, Minsk region, remains in custody after serving 15 days in jail and faces charges of insulting officials, <em>Pozirk<\/em> reported. Rights groups reassigned him a political prisoner status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 15, a judge in H\u0142usk, Mahilo\u016d region, sentenced Volha Ha\u0142amaka to 10 months of restricted freedom in home confinement for allegedly insulting a local road police officer in a post, Viasna reported. The woman pleaded guilty at the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaksandar Pali\u016dka from \u0141uniniec, Brest region, was given seven years in prison on five criminal charges, including calling for sanctions, slandering and insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaksandar Lavon\u010dyk, Ja\u016dhien Cybulka, Juryj Chavanski, Michai\u0142 Pietra\u0161, Filip \u015aciopin, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Baravik, Kry\u015bcina Dydy\u0161ka-\u010carka\u0161yna and Ivan Dydy\u0161ka are on trial in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, on protest-related charges, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 15, A\u0142a Ku\u017aniacova was given two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participating in a 2020 protest rally, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian human rights groups designated four people as political prisoners, <em>Pozirk<\/em> reported. All four were arrested during the February 14 raid targeting architects and are charged with public disorder criminal offences in connection with postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of March 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,414 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
