March 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has designated 16 men and three women as \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 3,864, says the updated list on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksim Ancipienka, Ihar Ivano\u016d, Andrej Karabicyn, Vital Ba\u017eok and Mikita Vilej\u0161yka\u016d, whom human rights groups consider political prisoners, feature among the new additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancipienka was convicted on protest-related charges; Karabicyn and Vilej\u0161yka\u016d, for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka; Ba\u017eok, for insulting an official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iavno\u016d was given three years of restricted freedom in an open-type correctional facility for allegedly insulting an official, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center but his extremist designation lists insulting and slandering \u0141uka\u0161enka as charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Azara\u016d, Ma\u0107viej Kuprej\u010dyk, U\u0142adzimir \u017dyhar, Ihar \u0141oban, Aleh Taler\u010dyk and Andrej Astapovi\u010d, members of the exiled ByPol resistance group, were also blacklisted as extremists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, a Minsk judge sentenced them to long prison terms in absentia on charges of plotting to overthrow the government and inciting hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azara\u016d was also found guilty of high treason, terrorism, and destruction of railway equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the extremist register are banned from education, publishing, government jobs and military service for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record expungement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
