March 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have met in Bucharest, Cichano\u016dskaja’s top aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brief meeting took place after Cichano\u016dskaja spoke at a European People’s Party congress the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader put a spotlight on Belarusians’ legalization problems in the European Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She hopes that EU leaders will continue to support Belarusian civil society and exert pressure on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s government to release political prisoners and stop supporting the Russian aggression, Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the congress, Cichano\u016dskaja also met with the Estonian delegation. It included a former foreign minister, MP Urmas Reinsalu, and a former defense chief, MEP Riho Terras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties discussed activities of the group For Democratic Belarus in the Estonian parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja urged politicians not to subject Belarusians to the same restrictions as Russians and not to pass a law prohibiting Belarusians with permanent residence permits from voting in the country’s elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also spoke out against limiting passenger connections with her country while banning the transit of sanctioned goods, and urged Tallin to continue issuing visas to Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Cichano\u016dskaja met with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi\u0107. She asked him to simplify the legalization of Belarusians in Croatia and sort out the issuance of travel documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Cichano\u016dskaja spoke about political prisoners, focusing on incommunicado detentions and the efforts, channeled through international organizations, to access them and have them immediately released,” Via\u010dorka added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She asked Croatia to support a recuperation program for repression victims’ children, as well as cultural exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and von der Leyen last met in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2023, they discussed the issuance of “New Belarus passports” on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
