March 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law enforcers arrested Minsk businessman Anatol Jakubovi\u010d, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> and a pro-government source reported. He allegedly participated in protests and donated $10 to the Nexta<\/em> media project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unnamed Brest man was arrested for participating in a post-election protest, pro-government Telegram channels reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 6 and 7, law enforcers released confession videos of two Hrodna residents. The first man said he was arrested for protesting and criticizing police and \u0141uka\u0161enka. The second man, believed to be Hrodna\u017ey\u0142bud worker D\u017amitryj Ho\u0142ub, said he participated in rallies in 2020 and left negative comments about police on YouTube and Telegram, pro-government Telegram channels and Sudy, Zaderzhaniya. Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pastor Alaksandar Zarecki, who was arrested on February 22 for praying for Ukraine, was sentenced to 15 days in jail under an Administrative Code Article that prohibits unauthorized rallies. Earlier, he received the same sentence for allegedly spearing extremism, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija (Christian Vision) reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 13, the Pru\u017eany District Court in the Brest region sentenced Vasil Ja\u010dy\u010dka to two years of restricted freedom in an open-type correctional institution for allegedly insulting the head of state, the Viasna center reported. He was previously detained from December 19 to 21. Ja\u010dy\u010dka was found guilty of making an insulting remark about Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in a Pru\u017eany hospital in November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 9, a district court in Minsk sentenced the spouses Mika\u0142aj and Ina \u0160la\u017eko to two and a half years of restricted freedom without sending them to a correctional institution, Viasna reported. They were charged with participating in a Minsk rally in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremism lists<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 19 people to the list of Belarusian and foreign citizens involved in “extremist activities,” bringing the total to 3,864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of March 8, human rights defenders identified at least 1,414 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
