March 13,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0New instances of politically-motivated persecution were reported on March 12, including arrests, lengthy prison sentences and a criminal case against a former Hrodna hospice director who had fled abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee brought seven charges against Volha Viali\u010dka, ex-director of the Hrodna Children\u2019s Hospice currently based abroad, Pozirk<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is accused of inciting social hatred, establishing an illegal association, mishandling personal data, larceny, inciting to riot and facilitating extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alieh Dziahciarenka was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison at the Homiel Regional Court on March 7 for alleged association with an extremist group and financing terrorism, the local branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Hrodna, a district judge imposed a three-year restricted freedom sentence on Siarhiej and Ta\u0107ciana \u010cy\u017e on February 26 for demonstrating in August 2020 with a sign that allegedly libeled Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Viasna reported. Siarhiej was ordered to serve his sentence at an open-type correctional institution, while Ta\u0107ciana is to serve her term in home confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Telegram channel linked to police reported the arrest of an apparel store manager for allegedly abusing \u0141uka\u0161enka and security officers in social media posts and sharing pictures of Russian military equipment with the Nexta <\/em>media company, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police in Mahilo\u016d arrested Juruj Brukvianko\u016d, 40, on February 29 over reposts of content branded extremist, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police in Minsk arrested Hretta Dalinkievi\u010d on suspicion that she took part in postelection protests and online events involving \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and administered the Telegram chat of Minsk\u2019s Nesterka neighborhood, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a man in Kry\u010da\u016d, Mahilo\u016d region, for sharing banned content on Odnoklassniki and allegedly insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested several Belarusian State University students for unknown reasons, said the university\u2019s underground trade union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremism list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have added a dozen of social media accounts and pages to the list of extremist content, as well as Avtodaydzhest<\/em>, an auto business advertising monthly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the evening of March 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,416 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
