Current UCP head Mika\u0142aj Kaz\u0142o\u016d and activist Antanina Kavalova remain behind bars for participating in 2020 protests. In mid-August, authorities shut down the UCP in an apparent clampdown on the opposition parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pro-government source said a trucker from the Viciebsk region was jailed for 15 days for sharing opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Hrodna sentenced local pizza chef Siarhiej Botvi\u010d to five years in prison for allegedly calling for riots, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrej Ivaniu\u0161yn will go on trial in Minsk on October 31 over 2020 protests, Viasna said. In June, he was released from prison where he had served a two-and-a-half-year term for allegedly threatening violence against a police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vital Michaj\u0142a\u016d, presumed <em>Salidarna\u015b\u0107 Ivacevi\u010dy<\/em> Telegram channel administrator, arrested on October 19, faces charges of creating an extremist group, pro-government sources said. In a police video, he admitted under duress to supporting the electoral campaign of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, participating in 2020 protests and transporting migrants to the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Detention conditions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prison authorities have been regularly placing jailed opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d in a punishment cell over the past few months, his wife Maryna Adamovi\u010d said on Facebook. He is currently serving a 14-year prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of October 23, human rights defenders identified at least 1,482 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
