March 22, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The fate of freedom, democracy, and the right of nations to self-determination is being decided in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has told the participants of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Forum in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian imperialism that suppressed the January Uprising in 1864 is now trying to destroy the European solidarity with Ukraine, the politician said. “The same empire is trying to convince the world that Belarus is a lost case and must be given to Russia as part of its sphere of influence. They are trying to build a new iron curtain between Europe and our people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow is sowing distrust in the region, she added, citing provocations in Lithuania designed to stir up hatred between Belarusians and Lithuanians and “to facilitate and justify further aggression.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusians rallied around the democratic agenda in 2020, tried to stop the movement of Russian military equipment via their country in 2022, and joined volunteers to fight Russia in Ukraine, as “the victory of Ukraine will also be the victory of Belarus,” she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus may become a game changer as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime “is more fragile than it seems” ahead of the 2025 presidential election, she said. “Changes in Belarus can weaken [Vladimir] Putin and help Ukraine. Belarus is the weakest link of Putin\u2019s war machine,” she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichanouskaja urged the democratic countries to step up sanctions against \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials, stop the transit of goods via Belarus and isolate the regime without isolating ordinary Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
