March 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Council of the European Union has called on the European Commission and the high representative of the Union for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, to prepare further sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a document resulting from the institution’s meeting in Brussels on March 21\u201322, the Council is deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprisals, human rights violations and restrictions on political participation and access to independent media reached unprecedented levels in the run-up to the February 25 parliamentary and local elections, which did not meet basic democratic standards, the document reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council called for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and reiterated its solidarity with Belarusian civil society and democratic forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, EU diplomat Dirk Schuebel said the bloc has already imposed seven sanctions packages on the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 18, EU foreign ministers decided to monitor the situation in Belarus and send \u0141uka\u0161enka a message that he could face even more sanctions, Schuebel said. They also agreed to focus on preventing disinformation from Belarus and Russia and supporting political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
