New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on March 22 with 32 new additions to the register of \u201cextremists\u201d and a<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>crackdown on a youth patriotic organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, police arrested at least 18 members of the Ma\u0142ady Front opposition youth organization, including family members of its leader Dzianis Urabnovi\u010d who is fighting Russia in Ukraine, the activists said on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man was arrested after talking online to Juryj Komar who is reportedly a police informer, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man from Biaroza, Brest region, is under arrest for comments about Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Vladimir Putin and Russia&#8217;s war on Ukraine, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Siarhiej Kacar from Minsk sentenced journalist Ihar Karniej to three years in prison on extremism-related charges, <em>Radjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 20, a judge in Homiel sentenced Siarhiej \u010cy\u017ee\u016dski to two years and eight months in prison on four criminal charges, Viasna&#8217;s Homiel branch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U\u0142adzimir Karol, 60, was given three years of restricted freedom in home confinement on protest-related charges, Viasna reported. The hearing took place at one of the Minsk-based universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge ruled to add 18 months to the four-and-a-half prison sentence against Alaksandar Kuliko\u016d from Mahilo\u016d at the prosecutor&#8217;s request, Viasna said. Rights groups consider Kuliko\u016d a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Extremist&#8221; list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry said it blacklisted 19 men and 13 women as \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities.\u201d Thirteen of them are held behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian human defenders designated 20 people as former political prisoners and demanded that their cases be reconsidered with the aim of reversal, rehabilitation and compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jailed opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk asked \u0141uka\u0161enka for pardon, <em>Belarus 1<\/em> TV channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inmates in Penal Colony No 1 in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, suffer from scabies, Viasna reported. It remains unclear whether they receive medical care and whether the prison authorities are trying to stop the infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of March 23, human rights defenders identified at least 1,410 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
