March 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Warsaw will deploy more troops to help border guards protect Poland’s borders, PAP<\/em> reported, citing Polish Defense Minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Servicemen will assist border guards in four regions, including the Podlaskie voivodeship on the border with Belarus, he noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw has already allocated funding for the military until the end of 2024 to strengthen national security and protect Polish citizens, the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that the move aims at determent rather than “intimidating” potential adversaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw reportedly spent nearly $375 million to protect its shared border with Belarus during 2021-2023, with about $215 million earmarked for 2024. A total of 4,600 servicemen have been assisting border guards since the start of 2024, according to the Polish defense ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2023, Warsaw completed the construction of a 206-km long fence on the Polish-Belarusian border. In mid-February, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for its modernization as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 21, the number of illegal border crossings by third-country nationals from Belarus into Poland spiked to 298, hitting a record high this year. Since the start of 2024, Warsaw has thwarted 2,331 illegal border crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
