March 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Aleh Hare\u0142a\u016d, a former top executive at Bie\u0142investbank’s Homiel branch, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was found guilty on charges of bribery, inciting hatred, and illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hare\u0142a\u016d, a native of Kazakhstan, was accused of taking a bribe, rights defenders said, citing the case files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also accused of posing messages critical of law enforcers \u2013 the charge widely used by police to persecute dissidents \u2013 and possessing marijuana for personal use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge fined him 40,000 rubels (about $12,325) and banned him from holding managerial positions for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Bry\u0161ciele\u016d, a former chair of Bie\u0142investbank’s board, has been on trial behind closed doors in Minsk since early December 2023. He has been in custody since April 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities accuse him, his associate Andrej Ramanienka and businessman Ihar Piskuno\u016d of abusing power and bribery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
