April 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union thwarted 743 attempts by third-country migrants to sneak into its territory from Belarus in the first three days of April, according to data from border services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three days saw 34.1-percent more attempts than January and February combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 1, the border services foiled 254 attempts to cross the border illegally from Belarus, including 229 into Poland, 16 into Latvia and nine into Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 2 \u2013 272 attempts (225, 47 and 0, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 3 \u2013 217 attempts (191, 26 and 0, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing the situation at the border on April 2 and 3, the Polish Border Guard said immigrants threw stones and burning branches at patrols. Seven migrants received first aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2024, the EU has registered at least 5,524 illegal crossing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace in February.The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
