April 5, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Kry\u015bcina Rychter, a legal adviser to Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, has welcomed the UN Human Rights Council’s April 4 decision to set up an expert group on human rights in Belarus, Cichano\u016dskaja’s Telegram channel reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of three independent experts has been set up to investigate and establish the facts, circumstances and root causes of all the alleged human rights abuse in Belarus since May 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their appointment will reinforce mechanisms for holding Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials accountable, Rychter said, stressing the importance of collecting evidence and the “mandate to investigate.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s team advocated this decision together with other Belarusian human rights groups, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The April 4 resolution by the UNHRC condemned \u201cwidespread and systematic violations of human rights\u201d in Belarus, calling on Minsk to \u201cstop the misuse of \u2018counter-terrorism\u2019 and \u2018counter-extremism\u2019 policies\u201d to prosecute civil society and political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
