October 25, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on October 24 as authorities kept punishing 2020 protesters and dissenters.
Arrests
At least nine people were arrested in Pietryka\u016d, Tura\u016d and \u017dytkavi\u010dy, Homiel region, a pro-government source said. In the police video, they admitted to following opposition content on social media.
Minsk police arrested a man for participating in 2020 protests and confiscated footage described as “unique,” a pro-government Telegram channel said. The arrested admitted under duress to following opposition content, writing critical online comments and communicating with the opposition Telegram channels.
Alaksandar Bojka, an engineer from Brest and a father of three, is under arrest for allegedly posting online a video showing the movement of military equipment on M1 highway near Brest, a pro-government Telegram channel said.
A presumed IT company employee was arrested in Hrodna for allegedly criticizing police officers online and following opposition content, a pro-government Telegram channel said.
Trials
Michai\u0142 \u0141apuno\u016d from Homiel was jailed for the sixth consecutive time on charges of sharing opposition content, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Rights groups consider him and his son Mikita Za\u0142ataro\u016d, who is currently serving a lengthy prison term, political prisoners.
Anisija Nazarevi\u010d and Ta\u0107ciana Fadzina went on trial in Hrodna on charges of sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut Telegram channel reported. Authorities did not disclose the verdict.
Criminal proceedings
A judge in Hancavi\u010dy, Brest region, sentenced Alena Michaluk to one year in prison for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in a phone call to the police, Viasna said. She is a mother of a toddler.
“Extremist” list update
The Committee for State Security (KGB) added four people to the list of “persons involved in terrorist activities,” its website says. Three of them, Kiry\u0142 Hnia\u017adzi\u0142a\u016d, Siarhiej Je\u016ddakimienka, and Kanstancin Prytulenka, are designated as political prisoners.
Other instances of persecution
Jailed rights defender Anastasija \u0141ojka was transferred to the women’s prison in Homiel, Viasna reported. In early October, the Supreme Court rejected her appeal against the seven-year prison term given on charges of inciting hatred.
Jailed activist U\u0142adzimir Hundar, currently serving a 20-year prison term, was transferred to a closed prison for the next three years, the Brest branch of Viasna reported citing his letter. He has recently spent two months in a punishment cell and can spend only 37 rubels (about $12) for purchases in the prison store. Prison authorities reportedly limited his long-term visits to only one per year.
On November 2, the Hrodna Regional Court will hear a liquidation suit against a cultural and educational public association from the \u0160\u010dy\u010dyn district, the Pravo imeyut Telegram channel said. The association used to support pro-\u0141uka\u0161enka rallies in the past.
As of October 25, human rights defenders identified at least 1,479 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
