April 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> An analysis of the number of prosecutions in Belarus shows “an almost constant level of repression over a fairly long period of time,” human rights lawyer Pavie\u0142 Sapie\u0142ka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would say that the repression has been at about the same level since 2021,” he said in Vilnius at a presentation of a report on freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From some point on, they have been hearing about a hundred criminal cases per month (sometimes more, sometimes less) against a larger number of people,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sapie\u0142ka, of the Viasna Human Rights Center, said the authorities used different tactics in different circumstances. In 2020, they cracked down on street protesters. Then police went after those posting critical comments on the internet. And when people became cautious about sharing their thoughts online, the authorities used other, sometimes heavier, charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If it is a plateau, we don’t know where the end is. We are living in the fourth year of a more or less clear \u2013 high \u2013 level of repression,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
