April 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 6,111 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since the start of 2024, says Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland has been leading in the number of illegal border crossings from Belarus with at least 5,045 attempts of which 1,164 have been recorded in April alone. Latvia follows with 916 attempts and Lithuania, with 150 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 5, Poland thwarted 214 attempts by third-country migrants to cross from Belarus after reporting 305 attempts on April 4, a record daily high since the start of the migration crisis in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal migration between Belarus and the EU spiked in the first week of April to 1,330 attempts, an almost 14-fold increase from January when only 96 attempts were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic States and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
