April 18, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>A proposal by Lithuanian MPs to limit trips home for Belarusian holders of Lithuanian residence permits to once every three months runs counter to the European Union’s policy towards Belarus, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has told Elta<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal also conflicts with the EU Council’s conclusions that call to support the mobility of Belarusians and people-to-people contacts, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Lithuania already has an effective system of verification of all those applying for residence permits, and [Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s] regime agents will look for other ways if they need to penetrate the EU,” Delfi <\/em>cited<\/a> her as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holders of Lithuanian residence permits are usually exiled opposition activists, students, ordinary workers, businesspeople or IT professionals who supported the 2020 postelection protests in Belarus and opposed Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine two years later, Cichano\u016dskaja noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill would not solve the security problem but help Vladimir Putin and \u0141uka\u0161enka isolate ordinary Belarusians, the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill amending residence permit regulations for Russians and Belarusians was registered at the Lithuanian Seimas on April 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian community in Lithuania has grown significantly in the last few years and now numbers more than 60,000 people, which makes it easier for Belarusian intelligence to find suitable recruitment targets, Darius Jauni\u0161kis, director of the State Security Department, said last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
