April 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Wolfgang Katzian, president of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (\u00d6GB), has urged<\/a> Belarusian Ambassador Andrej Dapkiunas to use his contacts in Minsk to try to find a favorable solution to the situation of convicted members of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BCDTU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a letter to Dapkiunas, Katzian noted that the continued cruel treatment of BCDTU members is incompatible with basic human rights, \u00d6GB reported today, on the second anniversary since the BCDTU leadership was arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00d6GB said that the situation of trade unions in Belarus is rapidly deteriorating. The sanctioned Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has not deviated from his \u201canti-trade union course,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The systematic persecution of trade union activists prompted the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) to declare April 19 an international day of action for free trade unions in Belarus, \u00d6GB said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, more than 35 members of independent trade unions were arrested between April 2022 and August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
