April 19, Pozirk. Eleven more people have been declared political prisoners, according to a joint statement<\/a> distributed by Belarusian human rights organizations today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They granted this status to Alaksandar Vierasovi\u010d, Viktar Sa\u010dko\u016dski, Alaksandar Ciare\u0161\u010danka, Ja\u016dhien Filipovi\u010d, Siarhiej \u0160eleh, Kanstancin \u0160asto\u016d, Siarhiej Zabieli\u010d, Darja Chmialnickaja, Vital \u010copik, Fiodar \u0160vieda\u016d and Artur Roli\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven of them were convicted in connection with donations to solidarity initiatives under Article 361-2 of the Criminal Code (financing extremist activities). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the prisoners were prosecuted for solidarity with Ukraine under Article 361-3 (participation in an armed formation, armed conflict or military action in the territory of a foreign state; recruitment or preparation of persons for such participation); for association with banned opposition groups under Article 361-4 (facilitating extremism); and in connection with 2020 peaceful protests against election fraud under Article 342 (organization and preparation of actions grossly violating public order or active participation in such actions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists demand that the Belarusian authorities immediately release all political prisoners and stop reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement has been signed by the Viasna Human Rights Center, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Belarusian PEN, the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House and Pravavaja Inicyjatyva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, 1,395 people have the status of political prisoners, but the actual number is estimated to be much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
