April 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian human rights community has declared<\/a> 16 more people to be political prisoners. They were accused, taken into custody or sentenced for offenses against public order in connection with 2020 peaceful protests against election fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the joint statement posted on the Viasna center’s website, they are Alaksandra Michajlenka, Vital \u010carkasa\u016d, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Barysa\u016d, Arciom Zavada, Arciom Kadyra\u016d, Eduard Apanovi\u010d, Alaksiej Leskaviec, Alena Stachiejka, Volha Tadro, D\u017amitryj Abramovi\u010d, Aleh Arciuch, Aleh Siarhieje\u016d, D\u017amitryj Chuta, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d \u0160ku\u0107ko, Arciom Nasanovi\u010d and Pavie\u0142 Marcinovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights activists called for an immediate end to their prosecution. These and other political prisoners must be released and reprisals against citizens must stop, they demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the Viasna Human Rights Center, the statement was signed by the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Belarusian PEN, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Human Constanta and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all, 1,407 people have the status of political prisoners, but many more have been imprisoned and prosecuted for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
