April 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) did not allow at least 155 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 139 attempts on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard said 135 foreigners tried to cross illegally from Belarus on Saturday and 95, on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service registered seven border violations on April 21 while their Latvian colleagues thwarted 53 attempts on Sunday and four, on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal Belarus-EU border crossings have soared to 4,671 attempts since the start of this month, rising almost 50 percent year on year. Poland has been the major target country with 4,079 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 9,463 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 7,960 attempts via Poland, 1,335 via Latvia and 168 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic States and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
