April 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The human rights situation in Belarus \u201cremains catastrophic,\u201d the Viasna Human Rights Center said<\/a> in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the human rights group, 987 people were arrested in the country in the first quarter of 2024. A third of them are women. Sixty-five of the detainees have minor children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the arrests, 406, were made in January. Viasna attributed the hike in the first month to a “massive KGB raid for food aid from the INeedHelpBY initiative.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The center also learned of at least 1,602 trials under the Code of Administrative Offenses that took place in this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarusian courts considered at least 671 cases in February alone. That month, the authorities began to prosecute people for “using foreign aid to carry out extremist activities.” This administrative charge had not been applied in Belarus before, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights group emphasized that the figures \u201ccould be significantly higher\u201d because not all cases of repression are made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
