April 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian authorities keep information about radioactive waste storage conditions secret, Andrei Ozharovsky, a Russian physicist and an expert for the Radioactive Waste Safety program, has told journalists on the anniversary of the world’s largest nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Chernobyl accident clean-up procedures, 92 nuclear waste disposal sites were built in the Brest, Homiel and Mahilo\u016d regions, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Pa\u016d\u0142a\u016d, of the Radioactive Waste Management Office at the Belarusian emergencies ministry, said that his agency reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency on decontaminated waste sites every three years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a few years, he said, scientists will come up with updated approaches how to deal with these sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, Belarusian researchers developed a new strategy to run these facilities, where about 400,000 cubic meters of clean-up radioactive waste is stored, he added, speaking at another news conference on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Licensed companies in charge of radioactive waste management monitor radiation levels there, he noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decontamination wastes of the Chernobyl origin are a great problem for Belarus, said Belarusian researchers in the workpaper “Remediation of Legacy Sites in Belarus.”<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disposal sites were mainly chosen without taking hydrogeological conditions into account. Therefore, most of them are of potential hazard because of possible secondary radioactive contamination of the ecosystems, the paper says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
