April 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Europe demonstrated a lack of compromise and failure to ensure control over conventional arms, surrendering the initiative in global security to Eurasian countries, Valeryj Ravienka, the head of Belarus’ military cooperation department, said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments reflect discussions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) defense ministers’ meeting on April 26 in Astana, where Kazakhstan’s Defense Minister Ruslan Jaqsylyqov proposed an agreement on confidence-building measures within the\u00a0SCO that would cover military inspections and sharing information on armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus and the SCO countries will form the basis for a new security order amid the “degradation and breakdown” of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), Ravienka cited Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dating back to the last years of the Cold War, the CFE Treaty was designed to ensure transparency of conventional weapons and armed forces in Europe. Moscow withdrew from the treaty in 2023, citing a confrontation with the West, while Minsk remained a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 17, Belarusian MPs supported a bill suspending Belarus\u2019 commitments under the treaty. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka may sign it into law after approval by the Council of Republic. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 2001, the SCO comprises China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Minsk applied for SCO membership in July 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
