April 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian government is increasing its security forces’ power and capabilities to control and spy on Belarusians, the Center for New Ideas said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its author, senior researcher Hienad\u017a Kor\u0161una\u016d, said that at least 35,000 cameras are installed on public and industrial buildings, in streets and parks. \u201cAdd the video surveillance systems that have been or are planned to be installed in companies, educational institutions and public transport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He assumed that most CCTV cameras are connected to a common system and facial recognition and vehicle identification software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe second area is individual body cameras,\u201d the expert said. \u201cIn addition to security forces, transport inspectors and railway workers who must wear them, authorities consider providing body cameras to housing and utility service workers, foresters and doctors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cameras are used both for watching those wear them and for expanding facial recognition databases, Kor\u0161una\u016d added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
