May 6, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>  The interior ministry added 23 more names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities\u201d on May 3, taking the total of entries to 4,034, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine are serving prison terms, 13 have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences, while one person is reportedly undergoing compulsory treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups listed jailed photojournalist Alaksandar Zianko\u016d as well as Halina Kra\u015bnianskaja and Valeryj Samsonienka as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zianko\u016d was given three years in prison for alleged association with an extremist group; Kra\u015bnianskaja, five years on charges of participation in an armed group abroad apparently for her support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces; Samsonienka, one year for desecrating state symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja\u016dhien Prudnika\u016d and Volha Prudnikava are serving their two-year prison sentences on protest-related charges, the ministry said. Both had been convicted without being present at the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed Juryj Majsiejenka, Alaksandar Hurd\u017eyje\u016d, Ja\u016dhien Zajca\u016d and Andrej Burak were convicted of alleged association with an extremist group and participating in violent disorder, charges that authorities often use to persecute political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are prohibited from engaging in education activity, publishing, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
