May 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The demonstration of a European prospect for Belarus hurts the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said today in Kaunas after a lecture on regional stability and security at Vytautas Magnus University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was asked about instruments of pressure on the regime in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, during \u0141uka\u0161enka’s rule people got used to the statement that “Russia is a friend and Europe and NATO are enemies” because “nothing else was offered.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Now we are convincing Belarusians that our future is in Europe, that we are a European country and that we want to restore our European roots,” the opposition leader said. “And people are beginning to think critically: ‘Why should we be with Russia? We want to go to Europe.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja noted that Belarusians in the country could not admit their pro-European views, but demonstrated them by, for example, sending their children to study in the European Union. “People understand that being with the EU means more opportunities, higher prosperity and stronger security for Belarus,” the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
