May 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights in Belarus continue to be widely and systematically violated, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. Repression of the regime’s political opponents and dissidents remains critically high, according to its report covering April 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the month, there were 1,386 political prisoners in Belarus, including 166 women. During the month, human rights groups designated 65 political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna said that arbitrary repression of citizens exercising their civil rights continued: at least 541 trials and arrests were reported in April, including at least 531 trials under the Code of Administrative Offences. Judges issued at least 31 administrative arrests, 45 fines and one community service sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders continue to regularly expose and document cases of torture and prohibited treatment during investigations of politically motivated criminal cases, prohibited treatment during administrative proceedings and persecution and imprisonment for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 4, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on human rights in Belarus and extended the mandate of the special rapporteur for a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
