May 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Maryna Zo\u0142atava, jailed editor in chief of the outlawed Tut.by<\/em> news website, has been awarded the Johann Philipp Palm Award by a German private foundation for her contribution to the freedom of speech and the press, Deutsche Welle<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zo\u0142atava will share the award with the women-led team of the Afghan Zan Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In the face of enormous obstacles and repressive measures, Maryna Zo\u0142atava has proven herself to be a person of extraordinary courage and integrity,” RSF and the Palm Foundation\u2019s board of trustees said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is in the top three world\u2019s largest prisons for journalists, with at least 43 media workers behind bars as of early May. The recent RSF World Press Freedom Index ranked it 167th of 180 assessed countries and territories, making Belarus the worst ex-Soviet country for journalists after Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities crushed Tut.by<\/em>, the country\u2019s largest independent news portal, in May 2021. About two years later, Zo\u0142atava and Tut.by <\/em>CEO Ludmila \u010cekina were given 12 years in prison each on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security also added both women to the list of people involved in \u201cterrorism,\u201d banning them from receiving money transfers in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A part of the Tut.by<\/em> team left Belarus to launch Zerkalo.io<\/em>, a news website that largely follows in the footsteps of the original media outlet. Belarus and Russia have blocked access to it. On top of that, Belarus declared it extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
