May 12, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Western sanctions against Belarusian authorities have disrupted the construction of a five-star hotel in downtown Minsk, the BelPol association of former law enforcers has said on Telegram, citing a leaked document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the presumed investor, Kopaonik Property Investment LLC based in the United Arab Emirates, constructed a pedestrian bridge over the Svis\u0142a\u010d River and covered repairs of historical buildings where The Basilian Minsk, Curio Collection by Hilton is operating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, construction of the main building that would host the five-star hotel has not yet been completed, BelPol said, referring to the investor\u2019s concerns about Western sanctions, which limited or prohibited the import of necessary materials and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investor reportedly has to find alternative payment options for foreign suppliers, given the ban on settlements in US dollars and refusal by several foreign banks to work with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka approved the project in 2015 and is expected to extend the construction period by one year, until late 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia’s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
