May 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland has deployed about 6,000 troops, police and border guards to guard its border with Belarus, said<\/a> Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year, EU border services have registered 14.239 attempts to cross the border illegally from Belarus, an increase of 4.2 percent from the same period last year. Poland alone thwarted 12,311 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TVN24<\/em> network reported that Tomczyk doubled down on Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s earlier statement that the fence between the two countries must be strengthened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice and engineers from the defense ministry have designed additional reinforcements. Intruders use tire jacks to bend bar railings, the deputy minister noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We said that this makeshift solution is unacceptable, because . . . bringing immigrants and crossing the border is really a threat to Poland,” Tomczyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Poland faces a “huge threat” from Belarus, but the military and security services are “coping with it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 21, Tomczyk said 6,700 military personnel had been ordered to secure the border in 2022, 3,000 more in 2023, and 4,600 since the beginning of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland completed the construction of the 206-kilometer fence along the border with Belarus in June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, Tusk said it should be reinforced “as soon as possible.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
