May 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja says she has accepted the European of the Year award from the European Movement Denmark “on behalf of nine million Europeans living in my country, Belarus, who want to return to Europe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At today’s award ceremony in Copenhagen, she said that for four years, Belarus has been living in an atmosphere of terror not seen since Stalin’s times, her chief advisor Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>. Describing the situation in the country, Cichano\u016dskaja said that “15-20 people are being detained every single day. One thousand \u2013 just in the last three months.” They are detained for “liking ‘extremist’ content on social media. For participating in cultural events. Or even sending parcels to political prisoners.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are thousands of political prisoners, and no one knows the exact number,” the democratic opposition leader continued. “Many have been held incommunicado, in full isolation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his regime are trying to “suppress any dissent. Any attempt at resistance. And any sign of solidarity. Free media and civil society have been liquidated and had to flee or go underground.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The regime also comes after those, who are not in the country. And it\u2019s more than half a million people who have fled Belarus since 2020. 6 percent of the population!” Cichano\u016dskaja noted. “Belarusians are being denied renewal of passports and other documents abroad. It\u2019s another revenge by the regime and it\u2019s a trap to lure them back to Belarus, where they risk imprisonment. If the regime can\u2019t reach them directly, they punish their families.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feeling impunity, \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime has become a threat not only to Belarusians, but also to the region and the world, she said. “It hijacked a Ryanair airplane . . . orchestrated a migration crisis, enabled the war against Ukraine, and now . . . blackmails the West with nuclear weapons.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She went on to say that the regime has “turned our country into a pariah for the world and a torture chamber for the people,” but even in this situation Belarusians “continue to resist.” Alternative democratic institutions of power have been formed abroad that “represent Belarusian people and answer their needs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We don’t know when a new window of opportunity will open. But we must be ready for it. To turn Belarus on democratic and European path of development,” Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, Belarusians’ struggle for democracy is also a struggle to regain their European identity. “Today, Russia and its puppet regime in Minsk are doing all possible to erase our national identity and destroy everything that connects us to Europe,” she said, stressing that this cannot be allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We, as Belarusians, can contribute to Europe as well,” the politician added. “With our unique culture, wonderful geographical location, open and hardworking people. I am confident that the European project will never be complete, without free Belarus, and without sovereign Ukraine. Therefore, today, I ask you to support our struggle. I ask you to support the European future of Belarus, and our efforts on European Integration.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on Europe to “support all those Belarusians who are struggling for freedom right now, and those who are suffering behind bars.” The democratic opposition leader expressed hope that Denmark “will not stay aside” from an international humanitarian fund to support Belarusian political prisoners. Cichano\u016dskaja urged Danes to back “independent media, human rights defenders and civil society initiatives,” as well as people-to-people contacts. (“Include Belarusians in your initiatives, organize cultural events. Support the projects strengthening Belarusian national identity and Belarusian language.”)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also encouraged support for Belarusians in Denmark, many of whom face problems due to expired documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
