May 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Armenia is “formally a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization” (CSTO), but its participation in the bloc’s activities has been frozen, the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked whether Yerevan intends to remain a member or plans to withdraw, the Armenian premier said it was “a subject for further discussion.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But it is very important to state the current situation,” the leader said, as broadcast on the forum’s YouTube<\/em> channel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The problem and crisis in our relations [with the CSTO] arose from the moment when Azerbaijani troops invaded Armenia. According to the CSTO procedures, the organization and its member states should support and help Armenia in this situation. But even after our official appeals, the CSTO refused to take any concrete steps. In fact, this was the main reason why we froze our participation in the CSTO at all levels.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked whether Yerevan expected “the West to fill the vacuum and guarantee Armenia’s security,” Pashinyan replied: “Our political position, our policy is to diversify international relations in all areas.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are establishing certain security cooperation with India, France and other countries,” he said. “Now we have certain cooperation with the European Union, we are pleased with the deployment of a European civilian observation mission at the border with Azerbaijan. Of course, it is a civilian mission, but on the other hand, it is a kind of new security factor for our region. And this is the first time that the EU is in any way involved in Armenia’s security agenda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, according to the Armenian prime minister, Yerevan is “looking to the future” and awaiting a decision on whether the country will join the European Peace Facility (an off-budget funding mechanism designed to enhance the EU’s capacity to prevent conflicts, maintain peace and strengthen international stability and security; to assist partner countries, support their peace operations or enhance the capacity of their armed forces to provide security on their territory).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We hope to start talks on visa liberalization [with the EU]. Last year, I said in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU deems possible. Our position has not changed,” Pashinyan stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, will address the Copenhagen Democracy Summit this evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus and Armenia are partners in the Eurasian Economic Union and allies in the CSTO. Minsk has maintained strong ties with Azerbaijan, with which Yerevan is at odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenia effectively suspended its participation in the CSTO after the organization failed to defend it during the recent war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pashinyan did not attend the CSTO summit in Minsk on November 23. Neither did any of his cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka called the Armenian prime minister’s refusal to atteng “provocative.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 12, Pashinyan said that if the CSTO did not define its zone of responsibility in Armenia, Yerevan would leave the bloc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, the country’s authorities also announced that they were considering EU membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
