{"id":8540,"date":"2023-10-27T01:15:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T22:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=8540"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","slug":"jailed-belarusian-human-rights-activist-drafts-prison-reform-concept","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/8540\/","title":{"rendered":"Jailed Belarusian human rights activist drafts prison reform concept"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 27, <em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian and foreign human rights organizations called for the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist Nasta \u0141ojka in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.article19.org\/resources\/belarus-human-rights-defender-nasta-lojka-must-be-finally-released\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was found guilty of inciting hatred and sentenced to seven years in prison on June 20, after a trial behind closed doors. The Supreme Court of Belarus rejected her appeal against sentence on October 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"block-image block-image-normal\">\n\n  <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lojko-2-e1698337285152.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/>\n  <figcaption>\n  \n     <\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The organizations condemned the physical and psychological torture to which she was subjected. &#8220;\u0141ojka&#8217;s arrest, torture and imprisonment is retaliation by the Belarus government for her peaceful and legitimate human rights work,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They called on the international community to &#8220;take measures to urge the Belarusian authorities to respect their obligations towards human rights defenders, by raising awareness in various fora, publicly condemning human rights violations, requesting visits to human rights defenders in detention and inquiring with the Belarusian authorities about their health and detention conditions\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We also call to utilize and explore available mechanisms for holding the Belarusian authorities account[able] for human rights abuses against human rights defenders, inter alia, by means of extraterritorial and universal jurisdiction and inter-state complaints under relevant treaties, and through strengthening existing accountability mechanisms,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, they pointed out that any assistance to \u0141ojka is punishable. According to human rights activists, two people were sentenced to 15 and 30 days in jail for bringing packages of food and essentials to her detention center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criminal case against \u0141ojka stemmed from her report on reprisals against anarchists and other leftists in 2017-18 criticizing police actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the judge read the verdict, she was only allowed to receive parcels from her mother. On October 11, the Committee for State Security (KGB) added her to its terrorism list, effectively banning her from receiving money transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all the hardships, \u0141ojka has not given up her human rights activism. &#8220;She helped dozens of other women cellmates to file complaints related to their cases. She also drafted a concept of prison reform in Belarus,&#8221; the statement reads. &#8220;This is a powerful reminder that persecution and imprisonment cannot force human rights defenders into ceasing their work. In fact, their voices can be amplified not just through letters, but through technology and social media.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement was signed by Human Constanta, the group \u0141ojka co-found; Article 19; the World Organisation Against Torture; the Netherlands Helsinki Committee; the Front Line Defenders; Pravavaja Inicyjatyva; the Belarusian Association of Journalists; the Belarusian PEN; the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the Viasna Human Rights Center; the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House; and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 22, these and other organizations had already denounced \u0141ojka&#8217;s sentence.
