May 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky has called for “maximum balance” in teaching the history of Russia and Belarus, TASS<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Medinsky, who co-chairs the joint Russian-Belarusian commission on history, this balance should be maintained “in school, vocational and higher education.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new common history textbook for grades 5-9, which covers the period from ancient Slavs to 1912, is a step toward that goal, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medinsky noted that a Russian-Belarusian council formed under the aegis of the commission on history would protect “historical truth” and promote “a common idea of good and evil” for the “common future” of Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission on history is co-chaired by Ihar Sierhiejenka, a former KGB general currently in charge of the House of Representatives in Belarus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 1, Moscow’s ambassador to Belarus, Boris Gryzlov, told the United Russia party that the two countries had agreed to write common history textbooks for schools and universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
