May 19, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The State Border Committee accused Polish law enforcers of beating and pushing back to Belarus five Somali asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian border guards reportedly found the group on Friday. Three were taken to hospital with leg injuries and abrasions, while two others were taken into custody by the Brest region’s Investigative Committee branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace since February and Poland becoming a primary target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, Warsaw has thwarted about 13,300 out of 15,300 illegal border crossings on the Belarus-EU border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the three years of the crisis, Belarusian border authorities reported 54 deaths of foreigners, including 25 on the Polish-Belarusian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk considers the crisis a hybrid war against Warsaw. On Saturday, he announced the allocation of about $2.54 billion to fund the new Shield-East project, stepping up the protection of Poland\u2019s shared borders with Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
