May 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka’s team and coalition running in the upcoming Coordination Council election reported “systemic reprisals” against their family members in Belarus, the Kamanda \u0141atu\u0161ki i Ruch Za Svabodu <\/em>Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement came after reports of searches and seizures of homes from several exiled activists, including \u0141atu\u0161ka’s daughter Jana as well as A\u0142a Puchava, Andrej Tupo\u016dski, Hanna Fiedaronak, Karalina Ciaren\u0107jeva, Ta\u0107ciana Baranava, D\u017amitryj Bandarenka, historian Viktar Jakuba\u016d and journalist D\u017amitryj Kazakievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raids are reportedly linked to extremism-related charges targeting 104 exiled activists, who celebrated the 106th anniversary of the Belarusian independence proclamation two months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persecution of dissenters inside Belarus<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alena Ciera\u0161kova, a surgeon and a mother of four, was arrested in Minsk on protest-related charges, dissidentby<\/em> reported. Her brother Maksim Viniarski had been sentenced to five years in prison on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a video posted by a pro-government source, Lilija Jacevi\u010d, 57, condemned Russia’s war on Ukraine. Police arrested her for allegedly posting more than 2,000 critical comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another video, a designer arrested for participating in 2020 postelection protests, admitted to sharing law enforcers’ data with an opposition project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translator Volha Ka\u0142ackaja was fined 800 rubels (about $250) for allegedly \u201cwaving hands\u201d at the police station following her arrest on May 10 and search at her apartment, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halina \u010carny\u0161ova, Dzianis Mik\u0161a and Arciom Sviryd were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. The verdicts remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry branded Bobr 97%<\/em> project and its chats in the Telegram messaging app as extremist content, identifying Maksim Chva\u0161\u010dynski as a member. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasil Prochara\u016d, his wife \u0141arysa, son Pavie\u0142 as well as Fiodar Aksionenka and Rus\u0142an Pracharenka went on trial in Homiel on May 20, Flagshtok<\/em> reported. Charges against them range from failure to report a crime and inciting hatred to facilitating extremism and high treason. The Prochara\u016d family used to live in the village of Hrabo\u016dka near the Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 6, a judge in Minsk sentenced pharmacist Raman Krukovi\u010d to two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participation in a 2020 protest rally based on a photo found on his smartphone, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former ONT<\/em> TV channel cameraman Anton Kazielski went on trial in Minsk on Monday on charges of calling for sanctions and inciting hatred in connection with critical social media posts, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights groups added 10 new names to their register of political prisoners on Monday: Mikita Vajciuk, Halina \u0141ahackaja, Valeryj Sakovi\u010d, Kaciaryna Madziankova, Jahor Zien\u010danka, Mikita Jefimovi\u010d, Natalla Sa\u0142uk, D\u017amitryj \u0141apiec, Alaksiej Za\u010dapila and Siarhiej Kule\u0161, Viasna said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 21, human rights defenders identified at least 1,374 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
