May 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Viasna Human Rights Center has called for an end to torture disguised as disciplinary punishment in prisons and penal colonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The end of torture, intimidation and reprisals, as well as the release of political prisoners” are the necessary prerequisites for “any genuine political dialogue, restoration of the national accord in the face of a threat to the Belarusian statehood and independence,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Not only will each day of delay bring more and more victims, it will also involve new and new people, who have not yet been complicit, in crimes against the Belarusian people, distance the prospect of restoring civil peace and pose a real threat to national security,” Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Deep sorrow for the Belarusians killed for their beliefs compels us to repeatedly draw the attention of the world community to the tragedy of the Belarusian people. They are hostages to the power ambitions of the dictatorships of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Vladimir Putin,” it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna went on to say that authorities have placed most political prisoners in “deeply discriminatory and particularly cruel detention conditions.” Many of them are held incommunicado for months, which is a form of torture. Hundreds of political prisoners are “particularly vulnerable and suffering” because of their old age, disability or family situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We urge you, despite the regime’s threats, to maintain your solidarity with political prisoners and people subjected to all kinds of political persecution,” it appealed to Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The release of all political prisoners, a review of sentences and exoneration remain a priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the prism through which any action at any level against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime should be viewed,” the appeal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
