May 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in a statement yesterday called<\/a> on Belarusian authorities to “stop harassing exiled journalists and ensure the media can work freely, both abroad and at home.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPJ mentioned the invasion and sealing of the apartment of journalist \u0179micier Kazakievi\u010d, who had fled Belarus. It also mentioned the search of the apartment where Barys Harecki, deputy chairman of the exiled Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ), is registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“After stifling independent media inside the country, the Belarusian authorities will stop at nothing to put pressure on exiled journalists like \u0179micier Kazakievi\u010d and on those like Barys Harecki who defend repressed members of the press,” said Gulnoza Said, a CPJ program coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American non-profit said it reached out to the Investigative Committee, the Committee for State Security and the Ministry of Taxes and Duties for comment, but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warned that the property of Harecki and Kazakievi\u010d could be confiscated. “RSF denounces the authorities’ harassment of journalists and their defenders,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police visited Harecki’s home in Belarus on May 17. Yesterday, state media reported on a wave of searches and freezes of the real estate owned by political emigrants such as Kazakievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the KGB declared the BAJ an extremist group. In spite of its forced relocation, the BAJ continues to support Belarusian journalists and media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the BAJ, 35 media workers are held in Belarusian prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
