May 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The complete isolation of political prisoners from their loved ones is a result of the government crackdown on defense lawyers, Maryja Kolesava-Hudzilina, of the Belarusian Association of Human Rights Lawyers, has told a gathering in Prague discussing ways to help Belarusian political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pointed out that lawyer Maksim Znak has been held incommunicado since February 2023. Znak and five other lawyers are considered political prisoners by human rights groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLawyers are few and far between,\u201d said the lawyer who was disbarred in 2022 and fled Belarus. \u201cLawyers refuse to defend political prisoners. My layer in Belarus refused to communicate with me and blocked me as a contact. When you don\u2019t have a lawyer it is a big problem for political prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that Belarus has one lawyer for 5,800 people in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities keep intimidating defense attorneys to discourage them from taking up politically-sensitive cases. The Belarusian Association of Human Rights Lawyers may provide assistance in such cases, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet even under hostile conditions, lawyers manage to mitigate punishment for some clients, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
