May 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Investigators in Belarus have raided the parents of Belarusian-born Polish Olympic sprinter Kry\u015bcina Cimano\u016dskaja, ByPol reported on May 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The athlete, who has qualified for Paris 2024 Olympics, has appealed to World Athletics for support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey have taken away my homeland from me and now they have come after my family, a usual provincial family whose dad worked as a fire fighter for all of his life and mom was a bank employee,\u201d Cimano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The raid might be linked to Cimano\u016dskaja\u2019s bid in an election for the opposition Coordination Council scheduled for May 25-27. The government in Minsk declared the opposition forum an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee on May 21 opened criminal cases against all 257 candidates, threatening to seize their property in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cimano\u016dskaja fled to Poland after a bust-up with Belarusian sports officials during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials withdrew the sprinter from a showpiece and attempted to send her back to Belarus because of her social-media criticism of the coaching staff for entering her in the 4\u00d7400-metre relay \u2013 an event in which she had never competed individually or team-wise \u2013 and her criticism of the Belarus Athletics Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The athlete asked police for help at Tokyo airport. From Japan, she flew to Austria and then to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish President Andrzej Duda granted her citizenship in June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
