May 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has added 29 men and 15 women to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities,” taking the total of entries to 4,100, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighteen are serving prison terms, 25 have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences, while one person was given a suspended sentence. One of the blacklisted individuals is a Russian national.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups listed jailed D\u017amitryj \u0160\u010derbin, Pavie\u0142 Makaranka, Andrej Brem\u0161midt, Aleh Dziehciarenka, U\u0142adzimir Kamenna\u016d, D\u017amitryj Papko\u016d and Ihar \u010carnavusa\u016d as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160\u010derbin, a father of three, is serving a one-year prison term for allegedly inciting hatred; Makaranka, two years for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka; and Dziehciarenka, eight years and six months in high-security prison for alleged association with an extremist group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brem\u0161midt, Kamenna\u016d, Papko\u016d and \u010carnavusa\u016d were convicted of extremism-related crimes and given unknown terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities also blacklisted Jahor Kra\u016d\u010denia accused of high treason and Valancina Zielankievi\u010d, a former political prisoner and triathlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from education, publishing, as well as from state positions and military service for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from jobs involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
