May 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Baltic States, Poland, Finland and Norway have agreed to create a “drone wall” to protect the European Union’s frontier, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agn\u0117 Bilotait\u0117 told<\/a> the BNS<\/em> news agency yesterday after a meeting with her counterparts from the mentioned countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is a completely new thing \u2013 a drone wall stretching from Norway to Poland \u2013 and the goal is to use drones and other technologies to protect our borders . . . against provocations from unfriendly countries and to prevent smuggling,” Bilotait\u0117 told BNS<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She did not specify the unfriendly countries, but in the current regional context she could have meant only Belarus and Russia. According to the minister, the “drone wall” will include a network to monitor the border, as well as defense systems against drones used for smuggling and surveillance. The project could be implemented with EU funds, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Bilotait\u0117, Lithuania has already developed a plan to protect its own border with drones. The country’s border service has recently established a UAV unit and is now acquiring more drones and defense systems against such vehicles, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the spring of 2021, the Baltic States and Poland have reported attempts by migrants from African and Asian countries to illegally enter the EU from Belarus, which they describe as a hybrid attack by Minsk and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The neighbors’ fears about security have been fanned by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the presence of Wagner mercenaries and Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
