May 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> There is still a “minimal exchange of contacts with individual representatives of Western states, primarily in the field of security,” the head of Belarus\u2019 international military cooperation department Valeryj Ravienka said on STV<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, these contacts concern “the preservation of the arms control elements that still exist, at least under the Vienna Document.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The general also pointed out “the very positive development of relations with Zimbabwe” and the intensification of military ties with Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“[Zimbabwe and Egypt] are interested in the quality present in the Belarusian Armed Forces, which is really high. For our part, we are interested in developing relations to pick up something interesting and new in their states,” Ravienka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that a large delegation from a Zimbabwean college that “trains officials of the highest level” will visit Belarus in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They are coming to study our approaches to building defense, to see what kind of combat training we have. At the same time, they would like to see the work of our parliamentarians, the organization of our public administration system. The same delegation will arrive from Egypt,” Ravienka announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense ministry is also receiving “positive signals from Algeria and Yemen,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 21, Ravienka announced that the defense ministry had established \u201cfirst contacts\u201d and reached \u201cpreliminary agreements\u201d with military attach\u00e9s from six Arab states: Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. These attach\u00e9s visited Belarus “as part of expanding international contacts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 17, the House of Representatives passed the first reading of a bill suspending the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The document awaits approval by the Council of the Republic and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
