May 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The newly elected Coordination Council should become a platform for coordinating joint strategies and campaigns by Belarusian pro-democracy forces, opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said on Telegram following the May 25-27 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be a forum for discussions to formulate a clear vision of the new Belarus and strengthen the pro-democracy movement, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m sure that the activities of the new council will become more public, raising and discussing issues that are relevant to Belarusians both inside and outside the country,\u201d the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone who participated in the election can be considered “a real hero,” showing that “Belarus is not only [Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s] regime but also a nation that strives for freedom and democracy,” Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am proud of every candidate who found the courage to run and fight for our common cause,\u201d she added, noting that reprisals, extremist designations and property seizures in Belarus did not stop people from running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the preliminary results, 80 people representing eight out of 11 electoral lists will become new council members. Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka and Movement for Freedom dominated the vote, winning 28 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new council is expected to convene on June 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Minsk designated all candidates as extremists and keep harassing their Belarus-based family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
