May 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has signed into law a bill suspending Belarus\u2019 commitments under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), says the document that has been published on the National Legal Internet Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus thus renounced its legal obligation to allow inspections of its conventional arms and equipment and exchange information on military capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk would resume its obligations under the CFE treaty if \u201cNATO member states resume its implementation,\u201d the foreign ministry\u2019s press office has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dating back to the last years of the Cold War, the CFE Treaty was designed to ensure transparency of conventional weapons and armed forces in Europe. Moscow withdrew from it in 2023, citing tension with the West, while Minsk remained a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk would not withdraw from the CFE Treaty completely and would continue fulfilling internal procedures related to its implementation in the Armed Forces, adhering to the established limits on weapons and military personnel, said \u0141uka\u0161enka in early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CFE Treaty limited Belarus\u2019 conventional weapons to no more than 1,800 main battle tanks, 2,800 armored vehicles, 1,615 artillery systems, 294 combat aircraft and 80 attack helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
