May 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union has not allowed at least 7,083 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since the start of May, almost 12 percent more than in April, says Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first 28 days of May, illegal border crossings soared 50 percent year on year. Poland thwarted at least 6,549 attempts, a 20-percent rise from the April level, while the Baltic states recorded declining numbers of illegal border crossings: Latvia, 500 attempts and Lithuania, 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last week of May, Poland remained the primary target of foreigners who tried to cross there from Belarus at least 256 times on Monday, while Latvia recorded 30 illegal border crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 18,202 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, with 15,890 attempts via Poland alone, 2,095 via Latvia and 217 via Lithuania. Illegal border crossings picked up pace in February and keep reaching record highs in May, Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
