May 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The House of Representatives, the lower house of the Belarusian National Assembly, has passed the first reading of the bill ratifying the Treaty on the Establishment of the International Organization for the Russian Language (IORL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization’s main goal is to create “conditions for strengthening comprehensive and mutually beneficial cooperation in preserving and promoting the Russian language as a language of interstate communication” on the principles of “friendship, good neighborhood, interethnic harmony, trust and mutual understanding,” the press office of the House of Representatives said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document accepts the IORL charter, which “defines the goals and objectives of this organization and also regulates the procedure of its activities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka approved a draft treaty on the establishment of the IORL on October 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev who suggested founding an organization to promote the Russian language around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While promoting the Russian language, the government in Minsk shows no interest in popularizing the Belarusian language. For decades, Belarusian was the prerogative of public initiatives and organizations, which the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime dissolved or pushed out of Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government pursues a policy of Russification. According to a census, the number of Belarusians who consider Belarusian their mother tongue fell from 85.6 percent in 1999 to 61.2 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although 40 percent of schools provide instruction in Belarusian, only about 10 percent of the country\u2019s students, just over 100,000, study there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked the government to increase funding for international programs promoting the Russian language and culture, primarily in the Commonwealth of Independent States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
