June 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Lithuanian government\u2019s ban on imports of more than 2,800 Belarusian and Russian-made goods, approved last week, has come into force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban, designed to weaken Belarus’ and Russia’s economies and protect Lithuania’s national security, covers 24 groups of goods, including live animals, meat and by-products, fish, dairy, eggs, honey, plants, vegetables, fruit, coffee and spices, grains, cereals, oils, beverages, tobacco and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only goods that do not have \u201calternative import sources\u201d are exempt from the ban. These include several types of mushrooms, berries, plant materials for weaving, molasses and certain animal feeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 21, the Belarusian government announced the expansion of the list of goods banned for import from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia and Estonia to include beers, hygiene products and other items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government linked the move to Lithuania\u2019s one-year ban on agricultural imports and higher duties on Belarusian agricultural products proposed by the five countries at the European Union level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Belarus banned imports of condensed milk products, coffee, juices, vinegar, fruit, nuts, tights and socks from Lithuania after Vilnius closed two checkpoints on its shared border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
