June 4, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Government-controlled prices will help keep the annual inflation in Belarus between 5 and 7 percent, Anatol Charyton\u010dyk of the BEROC think tank has told journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Bank of Belarus reacts to inflation risks cautiously, while its monetary policy remains loose to spur economic activity, he said. Anyway, he noted, the central bank lacks independence in decision-making, so the approach may not work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excess demand in the economy contributes to major inflationary pressures along with rising household incomes and demand in Russia, Charyton\u010dyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian manufacturers cannot make the most of Russia’s demand because of a labor force shortage, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the official data, consumer prices rose by 0.4 percent in April and 2.7 percent since the start of 2024. Annualized consumer prices rose by 5.6 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, BEROC expected inflation of 6.1 percent in 2024; the International Monetary Fund said prices would rise 6.3 percent; and the Eurasian Development Bank, 8 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is determined to keep inflation under 6 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
